The project funded by the government electrifies the capital

Since 2009, Daimler and RWE – supported by the German government – have been promoting greater electromobility on Berlin's streets. Daimler has contributed over 100 smart and Mercedes-Benz electric cars to the scheme, all of them powered by highly efficient lithium-ion rechargeable batteries. The vehicles could be leased by fleet, business and private customers based on a full-service model. At the same time, RWE set up around 76 charging stations at central points such as car parks, shopping centres and railway stations. The result is the creation of a blanket smart electricity charging infrastructure in public spaces. In addition, RWE is responsible for operations, the supply of green energy and central infrastructure system control.

Pioneering solutions for worldwide technology standard

  • Together with 20 car makers, suppliers and energy companies, RWE and Daimler have jointly developed a charging plug that stands every chance of being adopted as a standard solution across Europe.
  • Charge and pay: as easily as with a mobile phone. The "Plug & Charge" technology employed by RWE makes dealing with the technical aspects simple and straightforward. Plug & Charge guarantees the automatic exchange of data between the vehicle and the charging station during the charging process, while at the same time offering a customer-friendly and secure billing system.
  • Active control of the charging process: this way, the maximum available charging capacity can be taken advantage of while the vehicle is at a standstill and the corresponding electricity costs can be requested from the supplier. The benefit: at each charge, the most economical charging strategy for the vehicle in question can be calculated.Maximum safety: the plug and cable register whether the charging station and vehicle connection are in perfect technical condition. Only once this has been verified is the connection locked in place to enable the electricity to flow.
